The inspiration for the story came from a newspaper clipping: “Elderly couple apply to orphan asylum for a boy. By mistake a girl is sent them.”
During her twilight strolls through the Prince Edward Island countryside, Maud would devise plots in her head and brood up her hero, 11-year-old Anne Shirley, a “lonely, heart-hungry, friendless child.” Maud had intended to write “a nice little tale with a nice little heroine and a nice little moral” for a Sunday school weekly, but Anne “simply sprang into being in my mind already created – Anne spelled with an e, red-haired, dreamy eyed, and elfin-faced.” She took unusual possession of Maud, becoming “as real to me as if I had given her birth.” It was a shame to waste such an appealing character on a short story; as she remembers, “Then the thought came, ‘Write a book’.”
